John Cena announced Saturday night that he will retire from professional wrestling next year after two decades in the ring. After more than 23 years, John Cena is preparing to step into the ring for the last time.
He added that, despite announcing his retirement revelation, his time in the ring wasn’t over just yet. Instead, he would continue to make appearances throughout 2025, which will include WWE’s Raw heading to Netflix. “This farewell does not end tonight,” Cena said. “It is filled with opportunity.”

Although Cena has been known to display a towel that reads “never give up” over the years, this time he came out with one that read, “The last time is now.”
“Why am I here? Tonight, I officially announce my retirement from the WWE,” he said to shocked gasps from the audience. After so many years of leaving it all on the wrestling mat, John Cena has announced he’s calling it quits.

An affectionate Speech as John Cena announces Retirement
The wrestler-turned-actor delivered a heartfelt speech to a stadium of World Wrestling Entertainment fans in Toronto, who booed in disappointment as Cena said the 2025 season would be his last. He promised a farewell tour with dozens of dates and an epic final fight, and he assured fans he would remain involved with the wrestling franchise that launched his career.
Although the crowd booed at the news, they soon began chanting “Thank You, Cena,” to which he responded with his appreciation.
“Thank you so much for letting me play in the house that you built for so many years,” said Cena. “Thank you so much always for your voice, because it’s really loud, and your honesty, because it’s beautifully brutal. And most of all, thank you so much for allowing me to be with you here tonight to let the whole world know that we are planning something unforgettable, which also involves me returning to Toronto to kick some ass!”
“I have no intention of being physical in any way. No guest refereeing, no falling through an accidental table. None of that stuff. I will be a fan and an advocate, and that’s it” he further added during his surprise announcement,
“I’ve been doing this for a while, I’ve been in WWE for over two decades, and in that time I’ve seen incredible waves of prosperity like we have right now. WWE is the hottest ticket in town, no doubt. And I’ve also seen tremendous hardship, and that’s when no one knows your name, no one wants to be your friend, and only the most dedicated, hardcore fans stand by your side.”

Cena is a 16-time WWE champion over the course of nearly 20 years with the wrestling franchise. In that time, he has also transitioned into Hollywood star.Cena signed to the WWE in 2001, cutting back to part-time since 2018 as he has continued to grow his acting career in such movies as Daddy’s Home (2015), Blockers (2018), The Suicide Squad (2021) and his HBO Max series spin-off Peacemaker.
