Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif celebrated the national hockey team’s silver medal victory at the Azlan Shah Hockey Tournament by inviting the players to the Chief Minister’s office. In a gesture of solidarity, she joined the players instead of sitting in her official seat, personally congratulating each one and appreciating their winning spirit. The Hockey Team was honoured in the best way possible.

The Chief Minister extended her congratulations on behalf of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Muhammad Nawaz Sharif. “It is a very proud moment for us that you have raised the national honor in the field of hockey,” she declared. She also highlighted the appointment of a young sports minister in Punjab, who has already taken significant steps to enhance sports facilities.
Financial Support and Future Competitions for the hockey team
During the ceremony, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif presented the team with a cheque of Rs 30 million (03 Crore), emphasizing that hockey is not only Pakistan’s national sport but also national pride. She promised extensive support and patronage for the team, recognizing their success after 13 years. “Hockey players will be supported and patronized at every level,” she affirmed.
She criticized the previous administration, stating, “During the era of the so-called sportsman, sports facilities were closed. Instead of bringing a revolution in sports, they destroyed everything.” However, she assured that the current administration is committed to reviving sports, particularly hockey, across Punjab.
Commitment to Reviving Sports
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced plans for increased financial support and the establishment of hockey academies. “International experts will also be provided for training,” she revealed, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving the sport. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif is also expected to play an active role in this development.
Future Aspirations
Looking ahead, the Chief Minister expressed optimism about the future of hockey in Pakistan. “Seeing young players from all over the country, I can say that more success will be achieved in future with attention and support,” she noted. She encouraged the hockey team to stay in touch and cooperate for the revival of sports, ensuring them of the administration’s unwavering support.
The ceremony was attended by several notable figures, including Senator Pervaiz Rasheed, Provincial Information Minister Azma Zahid Bukhari, Special Assistant Zeeshan Malik, Information Secretary Ahmed Aziz Tarar, and Sports Secretary Muzaffar Sial.
The national hockey team expressed their gratitude for the Chief Minister’s patronage and appreciation, promising to strive for more victories and bring further laurels to the country.
