PAK-W Asia Cup Squad 2024 and schedule announced

The ninth edition of the ACC Women’s Asia Cup is set to begin on 19^th July in Sri Lanka. Eight nations will be participating in the competition with defending champions India favorites to lift the title for a record eighth time. All countries have ramped up their preparations and finalized their squads as we edge closer to the tournament. On Sunday Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) also announced the 15 players part of the PAK-W Asia Cup Squad 2024.

The PCB has entrusted Nidar Dar to take the responsibility of leading the PAK-W Asia Cup Squad 2024. The 37-year-old manages to retain his captaincy despite a poor run of form lately. Having represented Pakistan in 149 T20 internationals, she is the most experienced among the currently active women cricketers in Pakistan.

Also, she led the Green Shirts to a historic home series victory against South Africa followed by another historic triumph against New Zealand in their backyard. Hence, one can understand why the PCB decided to stick with Nida for this crucial Women’s Asia Cup.

Six players have been axed from the 17-member squad that toured England in May. This includes a relatively less experienced bowling trio of Umm-e-Hani, Waheeda Akhtar, and Rameen Shamim. Having represented Pakistan in less than 10 T20 internationals, they were the obvious choices to be dropped as PCB had to trim the squad from the last tour.

Other notable absentees include Natalia Pervaiz, Ayesha Zafar, and Sadaf Shamas. Ayesha is the most experienced of the three having represented his country in 26 T20 internationals and 32 One Day Internationals.

She had a decent home series against West Indies in May and scored an unbeaten 42 in the solitary match that Pakistan managed to win against the Windies. But a poor show in the ODI series against England proved to be the catalyst for her withdrawal from the squad.

Meanwhile, Sadaf and Natalia have shown great performances in the One Day internationals for the green shirts, but their numbers in the T20 format are not so great. Hence, they were dropped from the squad.

The four new inclusions in the PAK-W Asia Cup squad 2024 are Iram Javed, Omaima Sohail, Syeda Aroob Shah, and Tasmia Rubab. Iram and Omaima are the more experienced of the four having represented Pakistan in almost 50 T20 internationals. However, they last represented their country in 2023 which could be a bit of a concern.

But both are experienced campaigners and are currently participating in training camp in Karachi, so they must be able to get back to match fitness in time before the tournament starts. 20-year-old allrounder Aroob and 21-year-old left-arm pacer Tasmia also make it to the final squad. With Tasmia being the only uncapped player in the entire squad.

The eight teams in the tournament have been divided into two groups, with the top two teams qualifying for the semi-finals. Pakistan has been placed in Group A, along with Arch-rivals India, Nepal, and United Arab Emirates.
